Some World of Warcraft expressions explained

– in a way that actually makes some sense. WoW players are usually quite dedicated to the game. Which is to say, honestly, that they are quite incapable of expressing themselves in regular layman’s terms. Ask a WoW player to talk about Warcraft, and he or she will start rambling. And you will be none the wiser. It’s not just a WoW thing, of course. It’s a kind of nerd syndrome that affects many different kinds of people, including mathematicians, stamp collectors, and students of the occult.

But here’s a guy:

When talking World of Warcraft, what is a “tank”?

Excellent. And what does “dps” mean?

What’s an “instance”?

What’s the “Horde”?

Cool. And what’s the “Alliance”?

I love it. How do I get started?

Hvordan indsætter man en Google Translator-widget på en WordPress-blog?

Koden er ikke noget problem, for den kan man bare lave på Googles side. Men hvor og hvordan indsætter man den?

I want to own what you own …

This, being a collector, is the kind of response that will really make your day. A while back I posted a 3 min. video on Youtube, bragging about my Marquis de Sade collection — and here’s what one guy wrote in a comment:

Excellent. And speaking of collectors, here’s Tim Stuart talking about his fine collection of vintage editions of the “Chicago Manual of Style”:

I like that guy.

Blogging in English

Last few posts have been in English, and this one is as well. See if you can spot it. I don’t often write in English, and I probably make a whole lot of spelling mistakes, etc. Sorry about that. I’ll try to improve.

I’ve been thinking about this … starting blogging in English. Rather than Danish. The majority of my regular blog readers probably wouldn’t mind all too much. They are perfectly capable of reading English (and even mine, I should think). Most Danes are.

The pros go like this: 1) Ever since I started WoW’ing and got on Facebook, this blog – in Danish – has suffered. Quoting Alan Partridge (i.e. Philip Parsons who wrote the Alan Partridge review): It has at times seemed almost moribund. Perhaps blogging in English would make it come to life again. 2) Going English would make it possible for my English speaking friends to understand … and so on. Writing in English, you write for a much larger group of people. Potentially. 3) Id’ get to practise my English.

And these are the cons: Writing in English is obviously much harder than writing in my mother tongue. That’s one. And I feel pretty confident that writing in English – when just ranting about everyday sort of stuff – would made me feel just a tiny bit silly. Two. And non-English speaking family members read my blog, and I wouldn’t want to shut them out. So that’s three.

So I’ve been contemplating simply doing a blog No. 2, The Jiggly Room International Lounge (or whatever) — but I can’t have two blogs. Doing a second blog would be like giving birth to a stillborn baby, or to let the old kid die of hunger, beeing so busy feeding the new. Because that is for sure what would happen.

Right now I am undecided. But I’m thinking about it. Most likely I’ll just keep this blog, and then do some posts in Danish, and some in English.

Monk, Parker, Coltrane

Perhaps it’s that I’m such a wonderfully open-minded individual who likes challenging myself — or perhaps (and much more likely, I’m afraid) it’s just that I  rather enjoy self-torment. In any case, went to the shop today and bought myself 3 new jazz cds, “Thelonius Monk – Genius of Modern Music” (which is on this list that Capac referred me to), a collection of Charlie Parker Verve recordings, and John Coltrane: “Blue Train”.
