I had some reservations – in advance – when I ordered this book from Amazon. Which I blogged about here in Danish. It was Tom Clark’s book that started all of this:
– for me. And at one point I even wrote Tom Clark an email, thanking him for it. I remain grateful.
Ralph Maud – on the other hand – has always seemed to me too much of a Charles Olson devotee. He knows more Olson FACTS than anyone, I am sure, but he seems (Olsonian speaking) too caught up in the whole thing and lacks VISION. And I didn’t like what he’d done with the “Charles Olson Reader“. Nice job putting it out — only not so, since a reader is supposed to introduce to new readers, etc. Maud’s “Reader” is for the already initiated only.
BUT … Now I have the book, “Charles Olson at the Harbor”, and I’m reading it — and there can be absolutely no doubt about it: Maud is right. Clark’s got it wrong on a whole number of occasions, and there can – now – be no reading Clark without also checking with Maud. Much recommended.
My Charles Olson blog post – most of them in Danish – can be found here.
